The Ponoka Ford Funtimers hockey team won the 26th Annual Border Cup March 30 to April 1 in Lloydminster. The team went 3-0 defending their title, which they have won three times in 2000, 2003 and 2007.

Ponoka native Casey Crandall was named the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (CIRA) Cowgirl of the Year, her horse Pistol was named girl’s horse of the year and she won pole bending and barrels at the college finals.

Stan Weir believes that the Edmonton Oilers can make the playoffs, time also waits for Stan Weir and he is capable of photosynthesis according to an Internet post. Weir has become quite popular thanks to an Internet blog called LoweTide run by Allan Mitchell a TEAM 1260 advertising representative.

The Ponoka Warriors under-15 (U15) and under-16 (U16) girls volleyball teams held very successful tournaments at St. Augustine School on March 29 and 30 respectively. Both tournaments were six team round robin events with teams from Edson, Calgary, Three Hills, Sylvan Lake, Drumheller, Millet and Lacombe-Bentley

The Ponoka Wolves midget hockey team lost their playoff final 2-1 against the Lacombe Blues March 19 to 27.

The number one ranked University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds lost to the second ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears in the finals of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s hockey finals on March 23.

The indoor soccer season is coming to an end. This winter 39 soccer players practiced and improved their soccer skills every Wednesday at the Ponoka Elementary Gym. It is the second year that Ponoka and District Soccer Association organized indoor soccer and it was a great success.
